What Makes a Cosmeceutical Real
The word "cosmeceutical" has no legal definition. Any brand can use it. What separates a genuine cosmeceutical from a product that simply calls itself one comes down to four things: penetration depth, active concentration, clinical evidence, and manufacturing standards.

The Penetration Difference
The stratum corneum — the outermost layer of the skin — consists of dead cells. Conventional cosmetics deposit ingredients on this layer. They cannot reach the living epidermis where cell division, collagen synthesis, and melanin regulation occur.
A genuine cosmeceutical must be engineered to penetrate this barrier. This requires:
- Molecular weight control — ingredients small enough to pass through the lipid matrix between skin cells
- pH calibration — the skin's acid mantle operates at pH 4.5–5.5, and a formula must work with this barrier, not against it
- Delivery system engineering — phospholipid carriers, liposomal encapsulation, or similar technologies that ferry active ingredients to the viable epidermis

Active Ingredient Concentrations
Many cosmetics list active ingredients on their labels at concentrations below the threshold required for a cellular response. This allows a brand to make a claim without producing a result.
MD Cosmetique formulates at therapeutic concentrations. Our ingredients are present at levels where they do what they claim — which requires more complex stabilisation, more expensive raw materials, and more rigorous quality control than sub-therapeutic formulation.
Our Clinical Trials

Nothing in cosmeceutical regulation requires a brand to conduct clinical trials. MD Cosmetique did so anyway, through the Philippines Dermatologist Research Foundation.
Acne regimen results:
- 40% reduction in comedones at week one
- 72% reduction in comedones at week four
- 95% improvement in pustular lesions by week four
Phytic acid research:
- Clinically equivalent to 50% glycolic acid at 15 minutes
- Non-cytotoxic — glycolic acid at equivalent concentration IS cytotoxic
- Ki-67 staining confirmed cell proliferation with phytic treatment
- Tyrosinase inhibition comparable to Kojic acid
Oregon Tilth Certification

Oregon Tilth is among the strictest organic certifications in the United States. Achieving it at therapeutic active concentrations — where the formula must contain both potent active ingredients and certified-organic base components — is genuinely difficult. Most organic skincare brands use lower active concentrations because high-concentration actives are harder to certify.
MD Cosmetique maintained both: therapeutic actives and certified-organic bases.
FDA-Registered Manufacturing
MD Cosmetique's manufacturing facility is FDA-registered for both cosmetics and drug licensing. This means the facility meets federal standards for products classified as drugs — a higher bar than cosmetic-only manufacturing. Drug-licensed facilities must maintain stricter documentation, quality control, and batch consistency standards than cosmetic-only facilities.
30-Year Formulation History

Dr. Michelle Volynsky and Dr. Vartan Libaridian co-founded their manufacturing laboratory in 1995. For 30 years, they have been solving the central problem of cosmeceutical formulation: how to deliver active ingredients at therapeutic concentrations in an organic-certified base, with clinical stability, at scale.
That problem does not get solved in months. It gets solved in decades.
